Michigan Sheriffs Using MMJ Fee Funds for Dispensary Raids
In a stunning twist, Michigan Sheriffs have been using fees from patients in the state’s medical cannabis program to bust medical dispensaries. Sheriffs throughout the state have spent more than $600,000 in state grant funding for vehicles, raid gear, and overtime pay for dispensary stakeouts.
Activists in Michigan and throughout the state are appalled that money paid by patients and caregivers in exchange for access to their medicine is being used by the state to deprive patients of their medicine.
This reminds me of the common drug war practice of allowing police to use seized funds to conduct more raids, albeit with a particularly cruel twist. While we have made great progress down the road to legalization, it is sad that this type of drug war hypocrisy persists throughout our nation.
